Travis Cody lies on his stomach in the woods, feeling the cold ground seep through his body, connecting him with nature. The birds chirp in the treetops above him.

Ahead of him is a deer, or his dinner, depending on how you see it. Although the deer will soon be the meal for him and his family, he honours the animal and acknowledges the sacrifice it makes to nourish them.

Travis takes a deep breath and pulls the trigger, hitting the deer right in the head with a perfect shot. The deer falls to the ground without suffering.

He returns home at nightfall with the deer on his shoulders. Despite the darkness, his grandfather and father sit on the porch of the old house. Everything he knows about hunting he learned from them, and they guided him to realize that his career path lay in the military. He was just waiting for the letter to confirm his acceptance.

Eventually, that letter arrives, and years pass before he returns home. During his military service, he sent only a few letters to his family. His family is small, consisting of just his grandfather and father, as his mother passed away during childbirth with his little sister, who was sadly stillborn.

Nearly 7 years later, he returns home to assist in caring for his grandfather during his final days, but only temporarily before he has to return to the base. As he approaches the house, which should be white, he notices the paint is peeling off.

Then the day comes when his grandfather takes his last breath. Travis is both sad and happy about it, he loved his grandfather so much that he already misses him and his philosophies but he was in such pain the last time of his life, that it is a relief he is no longer.

He is now wondering how his father is gonna make it all alone. They live quite far in the woods, and even if you can take the rusty car that is standing in front of the house, he knows that his father won't do it. He only goes into town just for one thing, or rather two things, whisky, and the paper.

What happened next was something no one could have predicted, especially Travis.

One day, his father went to town to get that paper, but he never returned. That was their only car. Travis waited and waited, torn between whether he should walk to town to try and find his father.

One evening, while sitting on the porch, a group of people approached the house, each carrying a weapon.

They informed him about the state of the world, with infections everywhere, likely what happened to his father, and persuaded him to join them the next morning.
