Age of Empires Mobile Beginners Guide Part One

Age of Empires Mobile Beginner’s Guide Part 1: Starting Fresh with Empire Build Academy

Welcome to Empire Build Academy! I’m Favian, and today we’re diving into Age of Empires Mobile, a strategy game that blends stunning graphics with engaging gameplay. In this Beginner’s Guide Part 1, we’ll walk through starting a new account, navigating the early chapters, and setting up your empire for success. Whether you’re new to the game or returning like me, this guide will help you get started. Let’s jump in!

Why Age of Empires Mobile?

Age of Empires Mobile offers a rich strategic experience with detailed visuals and immersive cutscenes. I previously played on an old account (Empire 21, 5.6M power), but found progress stalled due to heavy-spending players on my server. Now, I’m starting fresh on Empire 245 to follow our 9-step process at Empire Build Academy, covering:

  1. Beginner’s Guide (Part 1 & 2)

  2. Construction Guide

  3. Research Guide

  4. Troops Guide

  5. Heroes Guide

  6. Defense Guide

  7. Attack Guide

  8. Events Guide

  9. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

All guides will be available on our YouTube channel and Empire Build Academy website. Let’s get started with the basics!

Creating a New Account

Starting a new account in Age of Empires Mobile is simple, even if you have an existing one. Here’s how:

  1. Click the top-left icon (your profile).

  2. Go to Settings (bottom-left gear icon).

  3. Select Characters.

  4. Click Create to choose a new empire/server.

I chose Empire 245, despite a warning about it being crowded, to test the experience. You can create multiple accounts to try different servers without needing separate logins—a great feature for testing before committing.

Tip: If you’re new, pick a recommended server for a smoother experience, as crowded servers may have more competitive players.

First Impressions and Early Gameplay

Upon starting, you’re greeted with a cinematic cutscene showcasing the game’s impressive graphics. While I skipped most cutscenes for this guide, I recommend watching them initially to enjoy the story and get immersed.

The game guides you through Chapter 1, introducing core mechanics:

  • Resource Points: Assign villagers to gather wood, food, and other resources (e.g., lumber camp, mill, farm).

  • Battles: Fight enemies like Erdin or elite tribes to progress.

  • Building: Repair and upgrade structures like the Swordsman Barracks and Town Center.

  • Heroes: Command units and unlock skills (e.g., Joan of Arc as your first legendary hero).

Key Mechanic: Use the drag icon to move your hero, a skill that becomes critical in later events and mini-games. The game’s intuitive interface and green arrows/circles make it easy to follow tasks.

Progressing Through Early Chapters

The early chapters (1–4) focus on building your empire and unlocking features. Here’s a quick recap of what we covered:

  • Chapter 1: Getting Started: Repair the Town Center, train swordsmen, and defeat tribal troops to unlock the Feudal Age.

  • Chapter 2: Grand Ambitions: Assign villagers to a lumber camp and upgrade it to level 4 for increased wood production. Upgrade a mill to level 4 for food.

  • Chapter 3: Raise an Army: Complete Island Tactics Level 2, train units, and upgrade the Swordsman Barracks to level 4.

  • Chapter 4: Rebuild from Ruins: Complete Island Tactics Level 3 and build a hospital to unlock Town Center upgrades.

Each chapter offers first-win rewards, so prioritize completing tasks to claim resources, speed-ups, and buffs.

Pro Tip: Use free speed-ups generously in the early stages to breeze through building timers (e.g., 12–25 minutes for upgrades).

Choosing Your Civilization

Upon reaching the Feudal Age, you select a civilization, each with unique buffs:

  • Chinese

  • French

  • Byzantine

  • Romans

  • British

  • Egyptians

  • Japanese

  • Koreans

I chose Romans for this playthrough, but all options are viable. Check the buffs (e.g., resource production, troop strength) to match your playstyle. Note: This choice may be permanent, so choose wisely. If you know whether civilizations can be changed later, let us know in the comments!

Recruiting and Upgrading Heroes

Heroes are central to your success. In Chapter 1, you recruit Joan of Arc for free via the Tavern (Legendary Arrival). Later, I purchased a 99p pack (currency varies) to unlock Hua Mulan, a legendary hero with:

  • Flying Swallow and Starchaser skills

  • Buffs upgradable via fragments

  • Talent tree (e.g., Military Tactics Mastery)

The 99p pack also included:

  • VIP exclusive rewards

  • Permanent Wrath Frame

  • Empire Coins

  • Luxurious Chest

Why Buy?: The pack offers an 11,513% value increase, making it a no-brainer for beginners. Avoid other packs until you understand which ones (e.g., event-specific) offer the best value.

To upgrade heroes:

  1. Click the hero icon.

  2. Use XP via the plus icon to level up (e.g., Hua Mulan to level 20).

  3. Allocate talent points for additional buffs.

Tip: Be strategic with XP allocation. I accidentally over-leveled Hua Mulan, so check which hero benefits most from upgrades.

Unlocking New Features

By Chapter 4, you unlock:

  • Quarry, Guard Tower, and Bulletin Board for resource gathering and defense.

  • University for research (covered in our upcoming Research Guide).

  • Hospital to heal troops.

  • Castle Age (requires Town Center level 10).

Red dots on the interface indicate new tasks or rewards. For example, I could build additional quarries, farms, and a hospital to boost production and defense.

Why Play Age of Empires Mobile?

From my first impressions, Age of Empires Mobile stands out for:

  • Stunning Graphics: Detailed cutscenes and smooth animations.

  • Engaging Mini-Games: Later events offer fun, strategic challenges (more in Part 2).

  • Accessible Gameplay: Clear task guidance for beginners.

  • Strategic Depth: Resource management, hero upgrades, and battles keep you engaged.

However, crowded servers with big spenders can slow progress, so choose your server wisely.

Age of Empires Mobile Beginner’s Guide Part 2: Mastering the Castle Age & Key Mechanics

Welcome back to Empire Build Academy! I’m Favian, and in this Age of Empires Mobile Beginner’s Guide Part 2, we’re diving deeper into the game’s mechanics, advancing to the Castle Age, and exploring the interface to help you build a powerful empire. Following our Beginner’s Guide Part 1, where we covered account setup and early chapters, this guide focuses on progressing through Chapter 15, optimizing resources, and understanding key features like alliances and research. Let’s get started!

The 9-Step Process at Empire Build Academy

At Empire Build Academy, we follow a 9-step process to master strategy games like Age of Empires Mobile:

  1. Beginner’s Guide (Part 1 & 2)

  2. Construction Guide

  3. Research Guide

  4. Troops Guide

  5. Heroes Guide

  6. Defense Guide

  7. Attack Guide

  8. Events Guide

  9. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

All guides are available on our YouTube channel and Empire Build Academy website, alongside other games like Evony and King of Avalon. For example, our Evony section features embedded videos and blog posts for each step, ensuring you have comprehensive resources to excel.

Advancing to the Castle Age

In Beginner’s Guide Part 2, we pick up where we left off, with my account at 183,891 power and ready to advance to the Castle Age. This milestone unlocks new buildings, units, and opportunities. Here’s how we got there:

Completing Island Tactics Level 10

To progress, we tackled Island Tactics Level 10:

  1. Access the ship icon (bottom-right).

  2. Select Challenge for Level 10.

  3. Assign multiple heroes (e.g., Josephine and two others) with archers for a stronger lineup.

  4. Click Battle to secure an easy victory.

Tip: Adding multiple heroes and matching troop types (e.g., archers) ensures faster wins. Exit after completing the required level to save time.

Unlocking the Castle Age

Advancing to the Castle Age is a major milestone, marked by a cinematic cutscene (skippable for efficiency). It unlocks:

  • New Buildings: War Hall, Gold Mine, Blacksmith

  • New Units: Skilled Swordsmen, Pikemen, Cavalry, Archers

  • Resources: Gold becomes available via the Gold Mine

To advance:

  1. Ensure you have enough resources (e.g., wood).

  2. Click Age Advancement in the chapter tasks.

  3. Use Quick Use for any missing resources.

Pro Tip: Watch cutscenes for immersion if you’re new, but skip them to speed up progress during replays.

Navigating the Interface

Understanding the game’s interface is key to efficient play. Here’s a breakdown of essential elements:

Power Boost and Hero Cultivation

Click the power icon (top-left, 183,891 power) to access the Power Boost Interface. This hub shows ways to increase power, such as:

  • City Development: Upgrade buildings like the Town Center.

  • Hero Cultivation: Enhance heroes like Josephine.

For example, I upgraded Josephine’s rank using 10 Josephine Medals to advance her stars, boosting her stats (e.g., Twilight Rose, Wild Rose Arrow skills). Check for red dots to identify upgrade opportunities, and use the Info button to find medal sources.

Resource Management and Villagers

Villagers are crucial for gathering resources. Access them via the Town Center (fork icon):

  • Train Villagers: I trained one more to reach 29 villagers.

  • Assign Villagers: Allocate them to resource points like the Gold Mine or Farm to boost production (e.g., adding two villagers reduced stone gathering from 1h 59m to 1h 19m).

  • Increase Capacity: Upgrade Houses to support more villagers (e.g., level 10 houses allow 10 villagers each).

Tip: Monitor the villager counter (e.g., 16/29) next to the power icon. Assign idle villagers (e.g., my 13 available) to maximize resource production.

Research at the Academy

The Research Academy offers buffs in two categories:

  • Economy: Boosts building speed, resource protection, and more.

  • Military: Enhances troop stats (e.g., Cavalry Attack +4% to 6%).

Strategy: Focus on Economy research first to reduce resource costs and speed up builds. For example, Building Speed 3 accelerates construction, while Resource Protection safeguards your stockpile. Military buffs can wait, as early-game combat is minimal.

Alliances and Rankings

Alliances are vital for support. Access them via the third bottom-row icon (16 red dot):

  • Join a Top Alliance: Check the Rankings tab (up arrow, bottom-row) for high-power alliances like Strongest Army (rank 2). I’m in H3L (rank 6), suitable for my tutorial account, but aim for top alliances if you’re active.

  • Benefits: Get alliance assistance for builds (e.g., 9 helps completed my Gold Mine upgrade) and earn alliance gifts.

Tip: If you’re not in an alliance, apply to one via the Rankings tab. Top alliances may require higher power or Town Center levels.

Troops and Heroes

The first bottom-row icon (helmet with swords) lets you edit troop formations:

  • Match heroes with troop types (e.g., Josephine with Archers, Joan of Arc with Pikemen) for bonuses.

  • Save setups for quick deployment in battles.

The heroes tab (second bottom-row icon) shows your roster. Red dots indicate upgradeable heroes or new unlocks. We’ll cover this in-depth in our Heroes Guide.

Items, Events, and Communication

  • Items Tab (bag icon): View resources like crystals (for Herald’s Mystic Store) or 24-hour shields. Check descriptions for usage.

  • Events Tab (calendar icon): Lists ongoing events with timers and rewards. Participate in Community Events (e.g., click Facebook, Discord, X, Instagram, YouTube links) for easy rewards without signing up.

  • Messages and Chat: Access Mail for updates (e.g., military, alliance, system messages) and use World, Alliance, or language-specific chats (e.g., English, French) for coordination.

Chapter 15: Flourishing Glory

In Chapter 15, tasks include:

  • Building and upgrading the Gold Mine to level 10.

  • Assigning villagers to the Gold Mine.

  • Researching Exploration.

  • Completing community events and alliance tasks.

Many tasks were already completed due to proactive upgrades (e.g., maxing walls). Use alliance assistance for longer builds and claim rewards promptly.

Tip: Early weeks shower you with resources to hook you, but progress slows by week three. Persist, as Age of Empires Mobile offers engaging events later, making it worth the grind.

The 99p Pack and Builder Queue

A third builder queue pack (priced at ~269, currency-dependent) appeared, offering:

  • 4x 15-hour speed-ups

  • Resources and other perks

Should You Buy?: If you’re committed long-term, a third builder is valuable for simultaneous builds, especially for time-intensive upgrades. The 99p pack from Part 1 remains the best starter deal.

Why Play Age of Empires Mobile?

Age of Empires Mobile shines with:

  • Stunning Graphics: Vibrant cutscenes and interfaces.

  • Strategic Events: Later mini-games are rewarding and fun.

  • Beginner-Friendly: Clear tasks and generous early rewards.

  • Alliance Dynamics: Support from top alliances boosts growth.

  • Check Red Dots: They highlight actionable tasks or upgrades.

Starting Fresh: Creating a New Account

My old account from Empire 21 hit a wall due to big spenders, but I’m giving it another shot. Here’s how to start anew:

  • Access Settings: From the top-left icon, go to the bottom-left Settings tab.

  • Characters Menu: Click Characters to view existing accounts (I tested two). Hit Create to start fresh.

  • Choose Empire: Select an empire (e.g., Empire 245). A warning about crowded servers popped up, but I continued for this guide. You can test multiple servers with one account—great for beginners!

The game loads with a cutscene (skippable), showcasing impressive graphics and leading to your resource area via initial battles.

Early Gameplay: Following the Chapter Guide

The tutorial guides you through basics. I skipped cutscenes but recommend watching them initially:

  • First Battle: Defeat Erdin to secure a resource point (likely wood).

  • Movement: Use the drag icon to move your character—key for later stages.

  • Building Basics: Repair the Swordsman Barracks, train swordsmen, and upgrade the Town Center. Green circles guide you.

  • Troop Training: Assign villagers to build houses, lumber camps, and mills, unlocking the Feudal Age.

Mini-games and battles (e.g., vs. Tika) add variety, though I fast-forwarded. Share your first impressions in the comments!

Unlocking Heroes and Upgrades

  • Legendary Hero: A 99p (~$1.25) pack offers Mulan, with a 11,513% value boost, VIP perks, and a wrath frame. Hold off on other packs until you research value via alliances.

  • Hero Leveling: Upgraded Mulan to Level 20 using pack XP. Focus on gold heroes (e.g., Josephine, Jonavar) over blues.

  • Talents: Spend your first point on Military Tactics Mastery for buffs—more points unlock as you progress.

BUILDING YOUR EMPIRE

Advancing Through Chapters

  • Chapter 1: Upgrade houses and recruit Joan of Arc (free tavern pull).

  • Chapter 2: Upgrade lumber camps and mills to Level 4 for resources.

  • Chapter 3: Train units and upgrade Swordsman Barracks to Level 4.

  • Chapter 4: Complete Island Tactics Level 3, build a hospital (required before Town Center Level 5), and unlock the Castle Age (Town Center Level 10).

Speed-ups (e.g., 25 minutes for Town Center) accelerate progress. New buildings like the University (research hub) and quarry emerge.

What’s Next?

This is Beginner’s Guide Part 1, offering a taste of gameplay. Part 2 will speed up progress, cover alliance covenants, and explore packs/events. I love the graphics and layout—let’s see how far we can go!
