Meet Your Guide: Favian from Empire Build Academy

I’m Favian, the creator behind Empire Build Academy, where I share in-depth guides, reviews, and strategies for mobile war games like Evony, Rise of Kingdoms, and Guns of Glory. Evony is one of my all-time favorite games, and I’ve dedicated numerous guides on my YouTube channel and website (#) to help players master it. Today, we’re focusing on wall defense generals—key to protecting your city in Evony 2025. Don’t forget to subscribe to my channel and like this post to support more content like this!

T1 Trap Strategy

  • Focus: Utilizes a massive number of Tier 1 (T1) troops, especially T1 mounted, to absorb and disrupt solo attacks.

  • Effectiveness: Excels against solo attacks by overwhelming attackers with sheer troop volume (300M+ T1 mounted recommended).

  • Example: A player with 500M T1 mounted troops can survive the initial volley of a strong attacker’s march.

  • Weakness: Vulnerable to rallies, especially if the attacker has strong buffs or a large march size.

  • Investment: Relatively low-cost, primarily requiring food and wood for T1 troop training.

T1 Defense Strategy

  • Focus: Incorporates T1 troops with layers of higher-tier troops (T2, T3, and above) for a balanced, sustainable defense against various attack types, including rallies.

  • Effectiveness: More robust against rallies and diverse attack strategies but requires careful planning and troop layering.

  • Example: A mix of T1, T2, T3, and higher-tier ranged troops designed to counter specific attacker troop types.

  • Weakness: Requires significant investment in higher-tier troops and complex troop management.

  • Investment: Expensive due to resource demands for training T10+ troops.

Balanced layers of different tiers

Investment

Low-cost (food, wood)

High-cost (resources for higher tiers)

Where Do I Stand? My current setup (2.4B power, 290M T1 mounted) sits between the two strategies. I’m leaning toward a T1 Trap due to my limited higher-tier troops (e.g., 370K T14 ranged), but a T1 Defense could work with more investment. For now, I’m focusing on T1 mounted to optimize my trap strategy.

Best Wall Defense Generals for Evony 2025

Choosing the right general is critical for a strong wall defense. Based on research from trusted sources like One Chilled Gamer (#), Evony Guide Wiki (#), and Cool Top Games (#), here are the top wall defense generals for 2025, categorized by troop type:

Ground Troop Generals

  • Top Pick: Zhang Fei (non-defense general but boosts ground troop attack and HP by 50%, defense by 40% when leading the army).

  • Others: Isaac Brock, Leonidas I, Militiades.

  • Why Choose Them? Ideal for players with large ground troop HP buffs for enhanced durability.

Ranged Troop Generals

  • Top Pick: Siegfried (excels in ranged troop buffs).

  • Others: Zachary Taylor, Arthur Wellesley, Franz Joseph.

  • Why Choose Them? Perfect for layered defenses focusing on ranged troops to counter attacker compositions.

Siege Troop Generals

  • Top Pick: Champlain (new general with strong siege buffs, recommended for Keep Level 40+).

  • Others: Takenaka Shigeharu, Edward Teach.

  • Why Choose Them? Great for siege-focused defenses, though less versatile for lower-level keeps.

Mounted Troop Generals

  • Top Pick: Haakan (increases mounted troop attack and HP by 50%, ground and mounted defense by 40%).

  • Others: Queen Boudica (5th place, still strong for free-to-play players), Takenaka Shigeharu.

  • Why Choose Them? Essential for T1 Trap strategies or layered T1 Defense with higher-tier mounted troops.

Note on Queen Boudica: As a free-to-play staple, she’s a solid choice for early-game players but lacks value for pure T1 mounted trap strategies. She shines with higher-tier mounted troops for T1 Defense.

Special Mention: Takenaka Shigeharu ranks high across multiple categories due to his versatility, but he’s difficult to obtain for non-spenders.

Optimizing Your General’s Equipment: Advanced Refining

To maximize your wall defense, refining your general’s equipment is key. Let’s look at my setup with Queen Boudica (5-star ascended, focused on mounted and ground troops):

Current Equipment

  • Koryo Bow: Flat refines with one percentage refine (needs optimization).

  • Helmet: Flat refines.

  • Parthian & Leg Armor: Flat refines.

  • Koryo Boots: Includes a “Grand Troop Load” refine (needs to be changed to mounted troop defense).

  • Bracers: Flat refines for main troop attack, but far from advanced refining.

Advanced Refining Tips

  • What Is It? Advanced refining unlocks additional buffs (e.g., 14.5% all-troop attack on Koryo Bow at level 25) once all four slots on a piece of equipment are gold-refined.

  • How to Unlock: Refine equipment (e.g., Koryo or Scythian sets) to four gold slots, then use refine stones (50 chances per day per equipment piece) for advanced refines.

  • My Plan: Convert the “Grand Troop Load” on Koryo Boots to a mounted troop defense flat refine and work on gold refines for bracers and helmet to unlock advanced options.

  • Pro Tip: Focus on premium equipment sets (Koryo , Scythian) as regular equipment doesn’t support advanced refining. Stockpile refine stones (I have 353K) for valuable event tabs to boost your progress.

Choosing the Right Assistant General

Your assistant general can significantly enhance your wall defense buffs. I’ve been using Isaac Brock (in-city ground and mounted attack/HP +30%, defense +20%), but research suggests better options for a mounted-focused defense:

  • Haakan: Boosts mounted troop attack and HP by 50%, ground and mounted defense by 40% when leading the army. Likely viable as an assistant despite not being a dedicated defense general.

  • Zhang Fei: Offers similar buffs (ground troop attack/HP +50%, defense +40%) and is recommended for ground-focused keeps but could work for mounted setups.

Question for You: Is Haakan a good assistant for Queen Boudica, or am I misinterpreting the “leading the army” buffs for wall defense? Share your thoughts in the comments!

My Strategy Moving Forward

Given my current setup and free-to-play approach, here’s my plan:

  1. Stick with Queen Boudica: She’s a solid choice for my mounted-focused T1 Trap strategy, but I’ll need to bolster my T1 mounted troops to 300M+.

  2. Wait for a New Defense General: With 56 epic historic general tokens (50 premium, 6 glory), I’m saving for a new mounted or main city defense general. Evony’s next release (especially with K50 on the horizon) should offer a high drop rate (17-20%) for a new general, ideal for ascending to 5-star.

  3. Optimize Equipment: Prioritize advanced refining on Koryo equipment to boost mounted troop buffs.

  4. Reevaluate Assistant: Test Haakan as an assistant general and monitor community feedback for better options.

Community Insights: What Do You Think?

I’m still refining my approach, and I’d love your input:

  • Who’s your go-to wall defense general?

  • Are you running a T1 Trap or T1 Defense?

  • Is Haakan a viable assistant for Queen Boudica, or should I consider someone else like Zhang Fei?

  • Should I wait for a new mounted general or a dedicated main city defense general?
